About the Sorority

International HistorySigma Gamma Rho Sorority was founded November 12, 1922, on the campus of Butler University by seven young ladies who became school teachers. The sorority was incorporated in 1929 and today consists of over 85,000 members in the USA, Caribbean, Germany, and Korea. The sorority extols scholarship, sisterhood, and service and is founded upon the virtues of faith, hope, and love. Collegiate and alumni members throughout the world lend their talents and time to support the sorority's national programs and partners. These include but are not limited to the March of Dimes, Centers for Disease Control HIV prevention programs, the National Bone Marrow Registry, breast cancer awareness, and Habitat for Humanity. For more information about the sorority visit our international website at www.sgrho1922.org. Theta Lambda Sigma Chapter HistoryTheta Lambda Sigma (also referred to as the Cary Alumni Chapter) was chartered September 26, 1997. Theta Lambda Sigma's thirteen charter members were a distinguished group of women working in the fields of scientific research, health care, human services, education and finance. The Cary Alumni Chapter immediately became active in the community by implementing the national programs. With a goal of bringing quality community service and positive representation to southern and western Wake county, signature programs like Caring Day, the Kwanzaa Wine & Cheese, and Sisterhood Soiree were implemented. In line with our sorority's motto, "Greater Service, Greater Progress", we continually endeavor to provide quality service to the community. National affiliates of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. include Philos, adult women whom we consider to be friends of the sorority, and the Rhoer Club which is a mentoring program for teenage girls. The aim of the Rhoer Club is to encourage girls to grow into women of substance who are dedicated to community service. Both of these affiliates are vitally important supporters of the sorority.
